Is Counting Calories Worth It?

For many people "counting calories" has been a big part of their weight control routine.

While knowing calorie quantities may be helpful, it may not be the end all be all that many of us thought it was.

A nutritionist said the important information is not the number of calories we're taking in, but the "quality" of calories. For example, a pack of crackers may have few calories but few nutrients as well. 1

Fish may have more calories, but also can help provide the nutrition your body needs.

So "listen" to your body, when it's hungry, when it's satisfied and maybe spend less time "counting" and more time making sure you get the nutrition your body needs.

May is National Arthritis Awareness Month. The Arthritis Association says that almost 53 million Americans suffer from diagnosed arthritis. "Arthritis Walk" events take place in communities throughout the United States. These events are major awareness and fund-raising activities for the Arthritis Foundation.

Huntington's Disease

This month is designated as Huntington's Disease Awareness Month. Huntington's Disease is a disease of the brain and nervous system. This disease causes mental and physical deterioration and late onset symptoms like balance problems. People are born with this disease, but symptoms become evident later in life. Many cases appear before age 50, but late-onset symptoms may start at around age 59. 2

Effects of Huntington's have been described as having ALS, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's simultaneously (Huntington's Disease Society of America). There have been continuing attempts to pass federal legislation — the Huntington's Disease Parity Act — that would make Huntington's Disease patients under 65 eligible for Medicare immediately upon their qualification for disabilty (Huntington's Disease Parity Act). 3

Tomato Walnut Tilapia

Here's a tasty seafood dish that's bound to be a hit at your table this spring.

  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium thinly sliced tomato

TOPPING:

  • 1/2 cup soft breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1-1/2 tsp melted butter

DIRECTIONS:

Sprinkle fillets with salt and pepper. In large skillet coated with cooking spray, cook fillets in butter over med-high heat until lightly browned, (2-3 min) on each side. Transfer fish to broiler pan or baking sheet. Top with tomato. Combine topping ingredients. Spoon over the tomato slices. Broil 3"- 4" from the heat until topping is lightly browned, and fish begins to flake easily with a fork, 2-3 min.

Guaranteed Universal Life: Something to Consider

If you're a senior looking for life insurance, a good place to start might be Guaranteed Universal Life Insurance.

This is flexible insurance that doesn't build large values. So, the costs may be lower than standard universal life or whole life.

Something to know is that Guaranteed Universal Life can act somewhat like term insurance. It may have a guaranteed death benefit that lasts into a particularly advanced age. (Some say this insurance "bridges the gap" between whole life and term.)

If your needs change over time, you may be able to decrease your death benefit. Contact me anytime and I would be happy to provide information on plans we have available that may fit your needs.

Contact me any time to discuss your insurance or retirement questions. Your consultation is free with no obligation.
