Main Cause of Blindness

Cataracts ... what are they? What causes them?

Simply put, cataracts are the greatest cause of blindness in the U.S.

This month of June is Cataract Awareness Month, a time to focus on this threat to sight, especially for seniors.

Experts see cataracts as a normal part of aging. They are caused by protein build-up in the lens of the eye, over time.

One in 5 adults over age 65 has cataracts (Health In Aging). Experts say surgery is the only effective treatment of cataracts.

While Medicare does not cover routine eye care, it does cover cataract treatment when approved by a doctor.

Exposure to the sun can increase your risk of cataracts.

How Can Annuities Help Seniors?

Annuities are insurance contracts that can make regular payments to you either immediately or at some point in the future. One of their main advantages: tax-deferred growth.

Here are some ways annuity owners can use annuities to meet their retirement savings goals...

Social Security and pensions often don't cover all expenses during retirement. An annuity can supplement those sources of income.

Additionally, certain annuities have guarantees which prevent seniors from outliving their income, and provide a death benefit for the beneficiary.

We at Cornerstone Senior Services have access to a wide range of quality annuities. Contact me today for full, free, information on this important retirement tool.

LONGEVITY ANNUITIES pay monthly income for life, generally starting around age 75. Ask me for details.

Recipe for good health

Veggie Skewers with Chimichurri Sauce

Summer's here — fire up the grill. Here is a healthy, easy way to kick off the season.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large, sweet potato cut (into large pieces)
  • 4-6 whole baby red potatoes (quartered)
  • Medium red bell pepper (seeds removed plus chopped into large pieces)
  • 1 med yellow bell pepper (seeds removed and chopped into large pieces)
  • 1 med red onion (peeled/chopped into large pieces)
  • 2 large portobello mushrooms (wiped clean and chopped into large pieces)
  • 2-4 ears of corn
  • 1-2 tbsp avocado (for brushing vegetables)
  • Healthy pinch of sea salt and black pepper
  • Optional, for serving: Chimichurri sauce or BBQ sauce
  • Directions:

Heat up your grill or preheat oven to med/high broil. Place your chopped sweet potato and potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook or "parboil" for about 10 min or until almost tender. You want them to be semi-tender — firm enough to stay on the skewer, but tender enough that they won't require too much time on the grill/in the oven. Drain.

Assemble skewers by adding the vegetables in layers to the skewers. Leave enough room at the top and the bottom to help with flipping and preventing vegetables from falling off. Brush with a neutral, high-heat oil and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper on all sides.

Grill (or broil) until grill marks are present and vegetables are tender and cooked through — about 10-15 minutes. Flip once at the halfway mark to ensure even cooking. If browning too quickly, move to the perimeter of the grill. If grilling corn, place directly on the grill without the husk, or on the broil pan. While the vegetables are grilling, prepare your Chimichurri or BBQ sauce (optional).

See You at the Senior Center

Of all the places seniors can go for a great time, the local senior center rates very high.

Where else can you have a good breakfast or lunch, meet terrific people, exercise, discover and discuss books, play pool, learn how to paint, even dance or get your taxes done.

Most centers are run by local governments like a city or county, in cooperation with departments, senior services and area agencies on aging.*

Seen as the first modern senior center, the Hodson Center in New York City, began serving older people in the 1940s. It's estimated that today there are about 10,000 centers serving seniors.

Over the years, there has been some efforts to change what senior centers are called. Some feel "senior" might be perceived as derogatory. (Worcester Telegram)

Men's Health Month, celebrated annually to cast light on conditions and behaviors that present dangers to the health and lives of men.

National Aphasia Awareness Month Stroke is the most common cause of aphasia, which is a language disorder that affects the ability to communicate. (Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital).
