Shoulder Stretches for Seniors

 Shoulder pain can create discomfort and make it difficult to participate in activities you enjoy. There are exercises specifically for shoulder pain that may help you get through your day more easily. 1 An example, Diagonal Shoulder Raise:
Stand or sit with a weight in your hand held over your opposite hip, your palm facing inward. Lift your arm up and across your body to the side.
At the end of this motion, your palm should be outward. Then go back to the start position and do 10 repetitions.

MEDICARE UPDATE: The "Donut Hole"
|
|
|
The "Donut Hole" has been much discussed since Medicare Part D (prescription drugs) was approved back in 2006.
The Donut Hole is a coverage gap that occurs after Medicare has paid out a given amount of money for your prescriptions.
But much has been done to whittle away at the Donut Hole over time. It officially closed last year. But some elements do remain.
The gap now begins when the amount your plan has paid for you reaches $4,130 a year (up from $4,020 in 2020). Then you're in the 2021 version of the donut hole.
You pay 25% of costs — a lower amount than before. Discounts and other payments help cover the rest.

Grilled Veggies with Mustard Vinaigrette
Try this healthy, delicious side that can make a summer meal with family or friends sparkle with good taste.
INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup red wine vinegar

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

1 tbsp honey
-
1/2 tsp salt
-
1/8 tsp pepper
-
1/4 cup canola oil

1/4 cup olive oil
VEGETABLES:

2 large, sweet onions

2 med zucchini
-
2 yellow summer squash

2 large sweet red peppers that are halved and seeded

1 bunch green onions — trimmed

cooking spray
DIRECTIONS:
Grill sweet onions, covered, until tender, turning occasionally. Grill zucchini, squash, and peppers, covered, over med heat until crisp-tender and lightly charred, turning once. Grill green onions, covered until lightly charred, turning once. Cut vegetables into bite-sized pieces and place in a large bowl. Add 1/2 cup vinaigrette and toss to coat. Serve with remaining vinaigrette. 155 Calories.

Some Seniors Still Smoking
|
|

 While smoking has dropped precipitously in recent years, millions of Americans still have the dangerous habit.
That's true for seniors as well as other age groups, but the CDC says older people have the highest percentage of people who smoke.
Cigarettes include toxins such as nicotine, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Cancers caused by smoking include lung cancer and throat cancer. The effects can be devastating.
A study found that 70 percent of all deaths related to smoking happened to people over 60.2
It's vital, of course, to do what so many people of all ages have done: quit as soon as possible. Medicare covers smoking cessation counseling that can help get smoking out of your life.
